Speaker Lance Chen-Hayes API Rainbow Parents of PFLAG NYC
Dr. Lance Chen-Hayes is a first-generation Taiwanese American immigrant and a gay father of a nonbinary queer teen. He has over 30 years of experience as a physical therapist and an LGBTQ+ community activist in both the U.S. and Taiwan. He has presented multiple lectures and workshops, provided mentorship for LGBTQ+ folks and parents, and participated in many protests, public speaking, and community events. He is also a regular speaker for PFLAG NYC’s Safe Schools program. He became the first publicly out gay father in Taiwan when his personal and family stories were featured in several media outlets in Taiwan more than a decade ago. He has served in leadership positions for queer Asian groups in Chicago and NYC. He currently serves as a steering committee member of API Rainbow Parents of PFLAG NYC. Since the pandemic, Lance has helped coordinate several major projects to foster changes in the nationwide API (Asian Pacific Islander) PFLAG community, including Black Lives Matter discussion group, Family Acceptance Project workshop, Family Acceptance Project poster translation into Asian languages, and parent leadership training program. Lance is passionate about fostering personal and systemic changes to make the world a better place for all LGBTQ+ folks.
